What job duties are involved in medical billing and coding career?

I will graduate from a medical billing and coding program this May and will be starting my search for a job before then. Can anyone tell me what job duties may be included in this career? Should I expect to work in the front helping patients or will I strictly code?

I’ve been volunteering at a local hospital for a few years now. I am planning to apply for a new job and I don’t really have much job experience aside from waitressing. Could I use my volunteer work as job experience? Since it is not a “real job” do you think the employer won’t give me a chance?
